This year, the SF Lolita Halloween meet up was at Straw in SF. Click the read more! to learn more about it.

My friend was a demon and instead of a tail she opted for wings. She was very unnerved by all the trolls in the bathroom.

People arrived throughout the meet. They came by to say hi, but chose to eat elsewhere. The restaurant has no parking lot of its own and there are no parking garages nearby. Everyone managed to find parking on a Sunday evening without too much trouble, but had to park a number of blocks away.
It was a pretty small restaurant. You can see everyone inside.

I was a witch. My inspiration was witches from fairy tales, particularly the witch queen from Snow White. That was been a popular tale and character this year in terms of movies and television. I was also inspired by actual witches, in a historical context. These witch women were smart women who often did a lot for their community. Therefore, I chose to embroider anotomical images on the dress.

The heart is center front, because that is what the evil queen wanted first from snow white. The rib cage and lungs follow, since the witch then tried to bind Snow White's lungs with a corset. The foot is by the lungs because the lungs are assciated with the legs; if you can't breathe well, you have trouble with running and such. On the other side is the skull and brain. The queen's last move was to attack Snow White through the mouth with the poisoned apple. The skull is also a symbol of death. The hand is located by the brain since the hand is associated with the brain; i.e. left or right handed and left or right brain. The bodice design is inspired by the rib cage. The faether on the hat is because the queen is also associated with the raven.

Table two was the next table started. I was going to sit there, but moved over to table three as the second table was right by the entrance to the kitchen, making it a little crowded.

As we were a large party, we had a fixed menu. We had a choice of three appetizers, three entrees, and two desserts. They also decorated our special menus with stickers. Their regular menus are fixed inside the covers of children's books.

Instead of cups, the drinks were served in jars with straws. The straws were red, which is good if you happen to have lipstick that rubs off.

The sweet tots were pretty good. They're made from sweet potatoes. Unfortunately, I don't like sweet potatoes. If you do, you'll likely like the sweet tots. These were my fiance's. I had a green salad. It was the sort with a lot of mixed greens tossed in a mild and sweet vinaigrette. It was also pretty good.

The emperor's new clothes looked lovely. I had the nerd's inspired shepard's pie. It again was something that tasted good, but the ratio of components was off, keeping it from being truly good. It needed to have more meat in it. It was large and could have fed two people.

I enjoyed the funnel cake the most. It's a lot of little pieces so you can dip it. The chocolate sauce tasted like brownie batter. The white was a vanilla cream, and the red was a tart strawberry sauce made from real strawberries, so it had none of that horrible fake strawberry taste. You'll be disappointed in it though if you expect a traditional funnel cake. This restaurant has a fun theme and is worth a visit at least once. I don't know if I will return to it though given its location and overall middling food.

After we finished eating/were ushered out for another party, we hung around out side and took some photos.

And that's where my day ended. My group was tired from a long Halloween weekend so we all went home. You can click through any of the photos to see the rest in my flickr photo stream. Most of the photos were taken by my fiance.

On Sunday, I met Fumiko! Fumiko is the owner/designer of Chantilly. She recently renamed the brand Enchantilic Enchantilly. Her company is still called Chantilly though. Click the read more link for more information.

Chantilly is a indie Japanese lolita brand. The brand was recently renamed Enchantilic Enchantilly. Her company is still called Chantilly though. While her dresses are manufactured, Fumiko makes pretty much all of the bows and other accessories herself, including the bows on the dresses. She also picks out all the fabrics herself too and does her best to listen to her customers. A lot of her pieces are one or few of a kind, because the fabric she uses for it can't be found again. She also does a lot of custom orders and requests as she has time, including for her non-Japanese customers. She's the first Japanese lolita brand that I have encountered that gives this level of care to customers outside of Japan. Many of her items are customer requests. She also custom dyed some fabrics to help meet customer requests. Fairly recently, she partnered with/hired an illustrator to make prints for her. Fumiko decides on the prints, and the illustrator draws them up from Fumiko's directions. Meeting her really inspired me a lot.
I keep working and improving and maybe one day I'll be able to host my own brand events.

Harajuku Hearts hosted a party for Fumiko's visit. We had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory and then went back to the store for a Q&A session and to play games. Afterwards, there was private shopping time where double stamps were given out for all Chantilly purchases.

I've never been to the Cheesecake Factory, so I was excited. I suppose I expected more than it was. It was a little hard to find the restaurant. It's on the 8th floor of Macys but only a specific elevator goes up to it and it's on a weird half platform in between the 1st and second floor. It's right by one of the entrances, but as I came in a different entrance, I had to find an employee to ask. This wasn't very hard though, and I was directed to the right place. As it was lunch, I opted to have a cheeseburger and a coke. The burger patty was good, but it didn't have the proper ratio of meat, bread, and cheese so I didn't enjoy it very much. The fries it came with were salty and not much to write home about. I enjoyed the complimentary bread the most. They had a sour dough, which I didn't try, and what I believe is a pumpernickel. The pumpernickel bread was very good, though it was crushed, which I did not enjoy. It was a Sunday afternoon, so it was crowded, but still.
The restroom has a nice looking design, but my local walmart has better equipment. There was a line that was very awkward due to how small it is. The line had to be blocking something. I won't return to the Cheesecake Factory unless invited or for a special event such as this Chantilly party. It wasn't horrible, but there was nothing to make it worth a trip or remembrance.

After lunch, we went to a little park across the street and took some photos. & a few people took photos of us and with us. The people on the tourest buses were excited to see us.
Then we walked back to the store and had a Q&A session. A few new items that Fumiko brought with her were introduced. That's where I learned most of the information I presented above. Her illustrator also handmakes some of the pieces, such as the utensil accessories. They're all hand painted by the illustrator.

Fumiko also expressed that she really likes when customers wear her pieces in their own way, which I do think a lot of designers enjoy. I know with my work, I love seeing a customer wearing something. When I make it, I have my own idea about how the item should be worn, but then a customer can take it, and turn completely on its head. They can do something with it that I would have never thought. The piece has now taken on a new life with its owner. At least at the last AP party I attended where two of the designers attended, they also seemed to really like when girls made pieces from the brand their own. It's really an amazing thing for a designer, and very inspiring. Despite the rigid rules sometimes enforced in lolita, I think the designers at least are open to some innovation.

Back on topic, we spent quite a bit of time on the Q&A, so we only had time for one game: old maid. I had a lot of pairs in the beginning, but in the end, I was not a winner. =( There were four winners and they happened to be all of the girls wearing blue and the one guy in attendance. Fumiko brought a special lunch tote bag for one of the prizes. While the lunch totes are available at the store, this one had lace that Fumiko added to the top herself. The other prizes were a pair of socks, a $30 gift certificate to the store, and a headband that was also like handmade by Fumiko.

With the game done it was shopping time! She has so many amazing items, and I think so many girls at the party couldn't resist making a purchase. I was included and couldn't resist purchasing a brooch I had been eyeing for some time. Fumiko also made some special chocolates for everyone who came.

This is probably my favorite party that I've attended by Harajuku Hearts/Angelic Pretty USA. I've been to the big AP parties, but the smaller attendance of this event made it a little more intimate, and I talked more than I usually do. I made a new friend, and talked to some other local girls that I haven't had a chance to talk to much. I also really enjoyed the Q& A session, and wish they would have that for more of their guests. I also enjoyed that it was a real lunch, instead of just a tea or other sweet snacks. It's also maybe the 2nd one of these events where I did not have a migraine by the end. I was worried I would have one, since I was shaking so much. But I made it through with flying colors. I'm really working on my health and figuring out what works for me, and I just started a new routine that seems to be working well for me.

I wore a dress from the brand with a carousel print. My theme was phantom carnival, int he spirit of Halloween. It is the 13 days, afterall. The hat was made my a local lolita accessory maker, though I'm not sure I got her name. On it I put a little masquerade mask made by Mr. Dada, a local duo who make accessories good for lolita, mori girl, and otome styles. I got my thigh highs from socks dreams. The book purse was designed and made by my boyfriend and me. The shoes are by Bobbi Blu, a brand by the same company as Mudd. It is no longer in business.

I want my dresses to fit you very well. Part of the reason I chose to take a break is because I had reason to question how my garments were fitting my customers. So part of what I've been doing over the break is evaluating the fit of my garments on various bodies. To make sure you receive a dress that fits properly, click the read more link and see the causes and solutions for fit issues.
1. Make sure you take your measurements properly.

The first thing to always do is to double check your measurements. A lot of people don't know how to take their measurements properly, which is certainly understandable. Most clothing is sold by sizes with small numbers attached, so you don't need to know your measurements; you just try on things until they fit. Clothing size charts are also often inaccurate, so please don't rely on those. Also, your bust size is not your bra size. Read my post on how to take measurements here.
2. No bra/improperly fitting bra

This is the number one reason I saw my dresses not fitting properly. Pretty much in every instance I've seen, this was the problem. My dresses are designed to be worn with a properly fitting bra. A bra that fits and is doing its job will keep your breasts located about halfway between your shoulder and your elbow. An improperly fitting bra or no bra at all can result in gaping around the neckline and weird wrinkles around the bodice, as seen in the photo above. The photo above is from a photoshoot I did maybe 2-3 years ago. I did not use the photos from it because the model did not do what was agreed upon, and I've had the lack of bra issue with a few of my models. And while you might not think a bra can fix that, I confirmed during this break that it can and will fix that. A bra that fits you right will help flatter you, making the dress look better on you and have a slimming effect.

But this is the bra size I measure to/I was fitted by someone!

-Often, stores just want to sell you a bra, any bra. Their bra fitters are often not really qualified, especially department stores. I'm also not a fan of Victoria's Secret and even Agent Provocoteur tried to sell me a bra that clearly did not fit.

-The bra size you measure to is just a starting point. You may measure a certain size, but another size may fit better do to your breasts' shape or spacing. It could also be the style of bra.

-Bra sizes vary by manufacturer. This means you might wear a different size bra across different brands.

-A lot of times, the bras are also just graded from a 34B or whatever they consider their median size to be. This means the 34B will have a true fit, but as you get farther away from that size, the fit gets more questionable.

-Bras are also not immune to the "vanity sizing" or just changing of sizing over time.

-Your breasts may also grow and/or shrink at a variety of times for a variety of reasons. Many women go up and down a cup size during their monthly cycle.

-Lingerie models are often wearing bras that do not fit them properly, if you happen to be basing your idea of a bra fitting correctly on that.

-The bra can also just be poorly made or worn out. A good bra is worth the cost as it will make all your clothes fit better, and you can wear it often. It will also last longer. Bras do stretch out over time. Many places recommend replacing them every 6 months. If you buy a good bra, it will last longer. If you have your bra on it's tightest hook and it's not doing it's job, it's probably time to replace it.

But bras are so uncomfortable...

A properly fitting bra should not be uncomfortable. You are probably not wearing the right size bra. Even for larger cup sizes, underwire isn't required, but look for bras with seams on the cups.

Read below and make sure your bra is fittng right. If it is, you may just be extra sensitive. I would check with a doctor to make sure you're healthy. Also consider a chiropracter as you may just have a alot of inflammation going on or be out of alignment.

I still don't want to/can't wear a bra for whatever reason.

While I am clearly in favor of bras, I understand and respect your decision. If you want to wear a dress fitted in the bodice, look for one with a built in bra or corset. I'm not currently offering that at this time. If you just want a dress, look for a looser, easier fit in the bodice or a stretchy fabric like jersey.

Does my bra fit?

- Check the cup. Do your breasts fit in the cups and fill them up? Make sure they're not overfilling the cup and spilling out. Underwires should not be digging into you anywhere. Also, make sure the cup is not flapping because your breasts are not filling them up all the way. If your breasts are different cup sizes, fit the larger size and slip a chicken cutlet in with the smaller breast.

- Check the bridge. It's that area in the front that joins the cups, inbetween your breasts. It should sit flat against your chest. It is permissable for it to not lie flat here when you are wearing a push up bra.

- Check the band. It should not be riding up or down in the back. The straps should be snug, but not tight; the band should be doing the work of keeping your breasts up. It should fit snuggly, but you should be able to get two fingers under it. When you first buy your bra, you should hook the bra on the last hook. That way, as you wear it and it stretches out, you can make the back smaller by hooking it on the smaller hooks.

- Check where your breasts are from the side. Is the fullest part about halfway between your shoulder and elbow? Are you comfortable? Good job! Your bra should be fitting you properly.

- If you have large breasts and/or want to go strapless, I recommend a longline bra. They stay up securely, distribute the weight to your torso, and provide a smooth foundation for the dress to lay on.

- Here's another article that talks about fitting bras and gives some video examples: http://www.007b.com/bra-fitting.php

3. Petticoat and/or Bloomers

Speaking of undergarments, if the skirt isn't as poofy on you as it is on me in photos, it could be because I'm wearing a petticoat. I wear a petticoat and bloomers under all of my fuller skirted dresses. Even without a petticoat, bloomers help effect the shape below the waist. I'm currently not offering petticoats and bloomers, but I will be soon.

When looking for a petticoat, select one that's at least 2 inches shorter in length than the skirt of the dress, unless you want it to peek out.

Malco modes make good petticoats. Here's one that's 18", a good length to get. This one is is a cupcake shaped petticoat, which is good for under skirts and dresses that are gathered at the waist. Feel free to ask me for a petticoat recommendation for any of my dresses. I often layer mine, and might layer those two for ultra poof.

Bloomers can easily be found on etsy and ebay. Again, I'd be happy to recommend some for you if you need and can probably whip up a custom pair for you.

4. Adjust the Straps
Many of my items with straps have buttons on them to allow them to be adjustable. You can take the button off and resew it
higher or lower on the strap to allow the bodice to sit higher or lower on your torso.

5. If you're still not happy with the fit, note that I will do alterations for free.

You'll just have to pay to ship the dress back to me.

I went to Maui to visit my boyfriend's family. I designed a couple new dresses for the trip. I actually ended up fixing my boyfriend's mother's sewing machine and sewing them while there. Therefore they aren't the best sewn, and may still get some tweaking yet. Click the Read More! link to see a preview of some new designs I'm working on for you all, including one for you bombshells.
This dress was inspired by a regency dress I saw and a popular style of Victorian dress for girls.

I had to try and keep up the tradition of taking photos with these things in sailor dresses.

I held my first fashion show earlier this year at Fanime 2012. It was part of the Indie Lolita Designer Fashion Show. It was my first show, so I learned a lot and will be more prepared next time. Despite my failings, I was still very proud of my models and my designs. Click the read more! link to see my portion of the show. Image heavy!

I get a lot of questions about measurements, so I figured I should make a blog post about it. This blog post will be updated as needed.

The main measurements I need for a dress are your overbust, bust and waist measurements. Optional measurements you can provide for a better fit are your bra size, your overbust/chest measurement, your back length to natural waist, and your height. Feel free to throw in any other measurements you want and mention any fit issues you tend to have or any concerns you have.

Genral Information for Taking Measurements
-It's best to take the measurements over the garments you'll be wearing under the dress or garment. It might not seem like it, but wearing a different bra or not wearing one at all can make a difference.

-Make sure your undergarments fit you properly! Your bust should be about halfway between your shoulder and elbow. If it's not, your bra is not doing its job. My dresses are designed to be worn with a properly fitting bra.

-You can find tape measures for about a $1 at a number of places. Supermarkets and big box stores like Wal*Mart and Target all carry them in addition to fabric stores. Look for them in the sewing and repair section,

-If you don't have a tape measure, you can use a ribbon or string. Just wrap in around yourself, mark where the measurement should be, and then measure it flat with a ruler.

-When you measure, stand how you normally stand.

-When you take your measurements, the measureing tape should be snug, but not tight. It shouldn't be digging into your skin.

-I recommend having a friend help you take the measurents, as having to bend over or hold the tape in place can effect some measurements.

How to take the Measurements I Require
-For your overbust/chest measurement-This measurement is taken over bust and under your arms. It helps prevent gaping at the neckline. Think of where the neckline would be on a strapless dress.

-For your bust- measure around the fullest part of your bust (across your nipples) and around your back, keeping the measuring tape as straight horizontally as you can. You want it snug but not pinching in.

-For your waist- measure around your natural waist which is usually about an inch or two below your rib cage. To find it, just bend sideways and measure straight across where the bend is.

Here's two videos that show how to take measurements:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=UguOJMyEs4g&feature=related
www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAMv9hS5Lz4&NR=1

Additional Measurements (and when to provide them)

-You can provide as many measurements as you'd like. The more measurements you provide, the better the fit will be. At worst, I just won't use them. If in doubt, just send it in.

--underbust- This measurement is taken right under your bust. If you see a seam line under the bust, this is a good measurement to send in if you want a snug fit.

-bra size- Most of my dresses are drafted for a B cup standard. A couple of them are drafted to a D cup. If your cup size is larger than that, it may cause the waistline to rise in the front a bit (as well as the hem), your chest to look a little squished giving you more cleavage, and possibly gaping at the neckline. The gaping usually isn't a problem if the dress has shirring and back lacing. The waist may also be raised up a bit in the front. If your bust is smaller than a B cup, you may have some extra fabric in the bust area that wrinkles.

-your back length to natural waist- This helps me adjust the bodice so the waistine will sit in the right place. The dress will likely still fit, but it's surprising how much difference an inch (or even less) can make in how flattering the dress is. It'll fit and look good, but it'll fit and look even better when the waist line is at the right place on you.

-your height- This is if you are taller or shorter than 5'4" to 5'6", then likely the length of the bodice and or skirt needs to be longer or shorter respectively. Send in your back length along with this measurement for best results, since standard I'll adjust the bodice length by 1 inch and the skirt length by 2. Not every body has a longer or shorter torso and legs.

-your shoulders- The standard shoulders on my dresses tend to be adjusted to be a little bit smaller. This is good for those of you who have narrow shoulders or trouble with straps falling off your shoulders all the time. It's a good measurement to provide if you order anything with sleeves from me. This measurement is measured from the bone in your shoulder, behind your neck, to the bone in your shoulder. It's pretty much right where your arm starts and your shoulder ends. The pictures will be updated in the next day or two to show this measurement.
Click the read more link for a write up of the meet and a review of the tea house.

It was raining off and on. The Rose Tea Lounge is located near Golden Gate Park on Irving Street in San Francisco. It's kind of a steep, hilly area, and it was difficult to find parking. Two members of the group spent an hour and a half trying to find parking, and missed much of the tea. My group managed to arrive early and find parking in a small nearby lot.

Parking: 2/5

While we waited for guests to arrive, a small feast was laid out. There was plenty of food for all, including things I liked. I'm a very picky eater who doesn't really like fancy, complicated food, so that's a big plus for me. There was plenty left over, so even the people who arrived late didn't miss out on choices.

Amount and Variety of Food: 5/5

Even though I was in it for the fruit, I found myself enjoying the treats as well. I especially enjoyed the coconut cookies dipped in chocolate and the almond tarts. I was informed by others that the sandwiches tasted good and were filling. There wasn't a complaint about any of the food.

Food: 4/5

Unfortunately, considering they're a tea house, the tea wasn't particularly good. It was kind of weak, an not flavorful enough. I was glad that I ordered a cup of hot cocoa, which was good. We tried their cherry tea and their apple cider tea. It smelled really good but failed to deliver.

Tea: 2/5

Everyone mingled really well. It seemed no one was left out, as can sometimes happen at meet ups when people just stick to the people they know. The teahouse was comfortable, not too hot, not too cold, and smelled of flowers since they also sold flowers. It was nicely decorated, but the floors and ceiling were left out.

Atmosphere: 4/5

After eating, it was time for photos!

The ladies all got together for a group picture, while the menfolk obeidiently took photos. Everyone was really shy for some reason, so I went first. I wore my Cars and Guitars dress. It was inspired by Angelic Pretty's Classic Melody jsk, Heather Ross's wonderful print, and Tori Amos's song Cars and Guitars. I made it quickly for her concert in Oakland back in December. I paired it with Angelic Pretty's Melody Doll piano bag in white for the concert, but took my new pink violin bag for the tea party. My shoes are from lovelyshoes.net and decorated with a shoe clip off a pair of Baby the Stars Shine Bright shoes and a pair of guitarr earrings from clairs. The headband was made by me. The necklace is from Alice and the Pirates.

A lovely couple. We had to pay for 15 people, which I guess was the minimum for our package. The staff were very friendly and good at allowing substitutions to the menu, such as the hot chocolate for me at no extra cost. They also had a piano player who played in the afternoon. They could sometimes be hard to track down and weren't the most attentive to our party.

Tea House Service: 4/5

Overall, the meet was a success and a lot of fun. I give the teahouse a 3.5/5. The food was good, the atmosphere was nice, the staff was friendly, and the food was good; however, parking could be a nightmare and the tea could be better.

Ivy Frozenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05481804922031026095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502242515856979429.post-48028693020881731322011-11-24T12:00:00.000-08:002011-11-24T12:08:55.477-08:00Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Today I want to talk to you about something very important: your bodies...

...and how you dress them! It seems many people are very insecure about putting outfits together, especially when they're trying to do a particular style such as lolita. Therefore I thought it might be nice to do a series of posts on putting outfits or coordinates together. I'm going to focus on dressing in the lolita style and vintage style since I think those styles go together well, and I happen to like those styles. That doesn't mean this series can't be useful if you aren't interested in those styles. I'll be going over some principles of art and design that anyone can gleam inspiration from. Hopefully, those new to the styles will gain some confidence, and those old pros of the styles will discover some new tricks. Today we'll start off with the golden rule. So click the jump so we can get this party started.

The golden rule is to look nice and flatter yourself. This rule supersedes everything else. You can break many rules in a style as long as you come out looking awesome. Don't get too caught up with trying to create a lolita or vintage look or whatever style you're going after and forget that. In most styles, that is the key to working it. Also, everything you do doesn't have to be in that style. If you have a dress specifically for that style, it doesn't mean you always have to wear it in that style. Here's a handy flowchart to help you get dressed in the morning:

Health and other issues have kept me from listening to music as much as I usually do. =( Music is the one art I don't do at all, but it also has the biggest impact on me. I usually have a song in my head, but this time I didn't. Luckily, Tori has come to the rescue again. She has a song for everything, and I'm excited to see her again in December. For this post, I've selected "Take to the Sky." I think it's very relevant to both this blog and myself at this point in time. I'll give you all credit and let you determine what the song is about.

<a title="Pirate by Ivy Frozen, on Flickr" I'm working on a lot of cool things for you guys. Keep an eye out for a site redesign and new clothes starting in September. Check back each day this week for more teasers and actual info, as well as one of my giant image posts filled with things I've sewn and the usual sort of stuff I post.

Glad to be Back,

Ivy Frozen

P.S. Take for example, fast fashion. We take it as a sign of the times, but fast fashion was shaking up the fashion world long before designers rushed to complete seasonal collections. Perhaps that's why I'm so drawn to the Victorian at the moment. Click the Read More! link to find out more about Victorian Fashion.

The Victorian era was named after Queen Victoria of England who reigned from 1837 to 1901. In the early part of the Victorian era, fashions lasted about a decade, but as communication and production were sped up, fashions soon lasted only a year or two. Before 1851, all clothes were entirely made by hand, making clothes expensive. Only the rich could afford to have a large wardrobe. But in 1851, the sewing machine was invented. Clothing was able to be made quicker and cheaper. Department stores spread. Ready made clothing was available in stores by the end of the century at prices the masses could afford. Of course, the wealthy still had their clothes custom made.

Since dresses were expensive, many of the excessive layers we associate with the time were designed to protect the dress. Undersleaves, camisoles, and attached shields protected dresses from sweat stains. Ruffles were attached to hems to pick up the worst of the dirt and mud from the streets. The ruffles could then be replaced. A plain petticoat was worn to protect skirts from a hoop skirt, with a fancier petticoat worn over for when the skirt bunched up.

Because dresses were so expensive, a woman did what she could to protect them. Decorative undersleeves could be slipped under the dress sleeve to just above the elbow to protect hems. Fancier gowns which didn't allow for a camisole, had shields sewn into the bodice to protect the material from perspiration stains. Ruffles were sewn into the hems of outdoor dresses. Even with the hem of the dress in front, they fell about 1/8th of an inch below the hem in back. The ruffle picked up the worst of the mud and dirt from the street, and could be replaced much easier than the whole skirt.

The wealthy, on the other hand, didn't have as many qualms about replacing their frocks. In 1858 Charles Worth made a collection of designs that weren't commissioned by an particular patron. He presented his collection on live models, and then people bought is designs. Until that time, fashion details and changes were suggested by the customers. He was a big hit.

Disposable fashion was also popular with the wealthy. Lovly dresses made from fragile materials were made, intended to be used only once or twice and then tossed. Excessive trims and decorations were used on dresses, which was also quite wasteful. Then as today, conspicous consumption and waste were seen as marks of great wealth and status. Yes, those wealthy Victorians were pimpin'.

It seems fitting the Victorian period is the start of the modern world, at least in my mind. Perhaps that's also why the steam punk style seems to be becoming increasingly popular.

This dress was inspired by the Victorian Period and lolita dress. It's actually two pieces: an overdress and an underskirt.

The underskirt has three rows of ruffles down the back, but only one ruffle in the front along the hem. I do have enough fabric left to make another of these for my shop, but it seems I won't add anything to the shop until the end of the semester. If you'd really like this dress though custom made to your size, just send me an e-mail, comment, or message.

References and Further Reading (& looking):

Dressing the Victorian Woman

Fashion Era.com: Early Victorian Costume History

Victorian Fashion

Long live Queen Victoria,

Ivy Frozen

Ivy Frozenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05481804922031026095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502242515856979429.post-72071303836865946052009-10-21T02:48:00.000-07:002009-10-29T17:47:11.729-07:00En Trees--Closed

The entries for my LBD contest are after the jump. Considering i'm only a student and becoz i've pretty much used alot of purple, i would accompany the ensemble with a black leather backpack/purse, some pearl stud earrings to keep with the classic style the dress radiates, a pearl necklace as well as pink lips and purple eye makeup!

#1 Cypriotchick

On the left is the skirt. I would pair it with a green tank and a turquoise cardigan. (to pick up the green hues in the cardigan) Under the skirt I would wear green tights under a pair of fishnet tights. The necklace depicted is an old locket that was my grandmother's to throw in a little vintage flair.

On the right is the top. I love the sophistication of a tailored sleeveless top. I would wear it tucked into a pencil skirt with a fun, floral print (although my drawing skills leave something to be desired). To add more color, I would wear a coordinating bracelet of some sort.

#2 Nicki

So why I chose the looks (provided in the attatchments) are because they
are very close to my personal style, and The dress just fits right in to
what I would normally wear so easy.

The day look, which has the waistcoat and shirt is perfect for work or
college and still has a little puch with the hat/lace-up waist coat, and
I love oxford style shoes.

The night look is my own way of using a splash of colour with the bright
red shoes and Bow. I decided to draw them instead of pasting a bunch of photos together. Forgive me the colors didn't turn out well because I used markers, couldn't find color pencils.

For the outfit on the left I paired your skirt with a royal purple top with sleeves that are shirred down the middle from the shoulder to the arm. For jewelry I added a silver necklace that is just a bunch of circles linked together with chains. Shoes are faux suede wedge heels that have a bow on the front.

For the outfit on the right I paired your top with a powder blue pleated skirt that has beaded designs and horizontal pleats near the bottom. It's here! Win a little black dress made by me. But since it is made by me, you know there has to be some twist to it, not just an ordinary LBD. Click the Read More Link! to find out more about it and how to win it.

As I mentioned before, black is a tough color for me since it's a very pedestrian color. When I design my clothes, I want stuff that you can't find in stores. Pretty much any woman's clothing store has a LBD. Plus, I'm terribly girly and romantic. Black is the color of mourning. And, it's a safe color. And I associate it with Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel, figures I associate with the boring "chic look", that makes fashion work instead of fun.

But, I decided all that isn't necessarily bad stuff. Black is a safe color, which is what makes it so versatyle. When I design clothes, I also consider that. I want my clothes to be able to have lots of wear. Plus, I can't say that I wouldn't like to channel an Audrey look or two, and Uncle Karl put out those awesome thigh high boots a few seasons ago.

So, without further ado, I present my vision of little black dress.

But, it's not actually a dress...

It's a skirt.

With inseam pockets.

Good size pockets.

A skirt holds its shape well even with something relatively heavy in its pockets.

And, it's a top.

A fairly plain top.

But, it takes decoration well.

And the zipper opens all the way, like a jacket.

It's made out of cotton, so it's a great base for diy, if you'd like to add your own permanent decorations. I lost contact with Chick Downtown, the folks giving it away. As such, I feel horrible. Hence, the huge vacation. Well, that and I tend to get caught up in my sewing. But I miss blogging.

Fear not! I do intend to make good on the giveaway. I will giveaway a custom made dress by me. Since the contest was about a little black dress, I'm going to giveaway my take on it. As I avoid black in ready to wear dresses, I also am uninspired by it for the dresses I make. It took me a while, but I think I have created something that will appeal to a great many of you as it appeals to me. It's everything a LBD should be. It's cut out, and ready to be assembled after I finish some orders. Since it is a change in plans, I am going to open the contest again for a week or so. I will ship internationally, so non-US readers will be able to enter. Everyone who entered before will automatically be entered. I'll do my best to contact you all and make sure you care for the new dress before entering you.

So be on the lookout for that in the next week or so. Give you guys early warning so you won't miss it, having given me up for dead. And hopefully I'll make my return to blogging.

I hope you all will forgive me,
Ivy FrozenIvy Frozenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05481804922031026095noreply@blogger.com3
